You get the OLE-perl module out of CPAN. Using this module inside perl you can read ms-word and ms-excel files and writing them out again as clean text files, csv or even html files. Including this tools into netscape is quite easy. It is not a plugin, but it works fine as a "helper".

Alt+Tab Replacement with Power Toy

For those of you who use the Alt+Tab key combination to switch between open windows on your desktop, I am sure you have encountered times when you cannot distinguish one window from the other due to having more than one instance of the same program open.

Microsoft became aware of this draw-back after releasing the XP operating system and subsequently released a "Power Toy" to resolve this issue. The Power Toy resolves this issue by replacing the program icons with actual screenshots of your open windows. This way you can locate exactly which window you wish to switch to, which is immensely useful when navigating between several SAP windows at one time.

Here are pictures of using the Alt+Tab key combination both pre- and post- installation of the Power Toy:

As you can see in the first example above, it is impossible to differentiate between the IE instances and the SAP instances by looking at the icons. In the subsequent example, the screenshot clearly differentiates the windows.

However, if performed incorrectly, it is of little value and even worse, can create a false sense of security. In this tip, we'll examine what a Web application pen test is, provide strategies for getting the most out of them and most importantly, provide proper procedures to avoid this scenario.

Web application pen testing involves testing a running application remotely, without knowing the inner workings of the application itself, in order to find possible vulnerabilities. To avoid an inefficient scattergun approach, the best way to perform them is to carry out a series of methodical and repeatable tests, and to work through all of the different application vulnerabilities. However, because pen testing is not an exact science, it is best to troubleshoot any existing concerns within a testing framework. Below are three steps you can take to ensure your pen test is a success:

Gather as much information as possible about the application and the infrastructure it resides on.

Perform an infrastructure-level pen test to check how the infrastructure is deployed and secured. If the application server can be exploited, it can give you more leverage in exploiting the Web application.

When testing the application, look for any entry points where user input is accepted and dynamic content is generated. Then, probe these areas for weaknesses in input validation, session manipulation, authentication and information leakage. If any internal information is leaked, it should be recorded and used to re-assess your overall understanding of the application and how it works.
If at any point you uncover a serious vulnerability that could lead to an application or system compromise, inform the system administrator or relevant contact about the risks. Once the tests are complete, record the results, report which vulnerabilities were tested and provide risk assessments for any vulnerabilities found.

Successful Leaders do not make the following mistakes:

1. "Power Hungry"

Do you know a "leader" who says and does crazy things that you know they do just because they can? Well, isn't that silly.

They bring very little to the table to move the team forward and bring morale up. In fact, power hungry leaders do the opposite. It makes people NOT want to work for them.

If you're one of these types, try checking you ego at the door and stop "bossing" your people around.

2. Can't or Won't Delegate Responsibility

They must do everything themselves. Yea right!

"I empower you. But you must check with me before you do anything substantial." Do this to me more than once and I'm as de-motivated as the come.

Have faith and confidence in your people. Allow them to do their job and even make mistakes. That's how we all learn.

3. Lack of Industry/Product Knowledge

Nothing is scarier than when a sales rep or technical person is speaking with a customer and they don't know what they are talking about!

What happens when that person is a leader of a team? That's right, poor results all the way around.

Be an expert in your field and spend whatever time is necessary to master your products, services and industry that you're in.

4. Unwilling to Lead By Example

"Do as I say not as I do." That statement is no longer good enough. To be a great leader you must be willing to get your hands dirty and show your people how it's done when the circumstances warrant it.

5. Unwilling to Adapt to Change

Sorry folks, change is inevitable. It will always be there and it will always happen.

You must first be willing to accept that things will always change and you must be willing to make the best of it. If you can do that and do it with integrity and a positive frame of mind, congrats you're on your way to becoming a top-notch leader.

6. Won't Accept Others Ideas

"Must I do everything myself?"

"Of course not. Just give me a chance. I have great ideas and I want you to hear them."

Try listening to the ones around you. But you must do it with an OPEN MIND.

7. Blaming Others

Oh boy. This is an entire subject all it's own.

If you really want to be the greatest leader ever, take personal responsibility for your actions.

It's okay. In fact, it's quit fulfilling to say, "Sorry, I made a mistake and it won't happen again. I learned from it and will prevent it from happening again by doing ______________."

8. Not Watching Their Teammates Back

When it comes down to the nitty gritty and the head honchos are wanting answers you must be the "leader" that has your teammate's back.

If you can't, with confidence, stick up for your teammate(s), you must look in the mirror and ask yourself, "What could I have done to ensure our success with this project?" And definitely do not place blame on someone else.

9. Taking Credit for Others Ideas

This goes along with number 10 below. But if you don't have the confidence in yourself to give credit where credit's due, then I truly believe, "What goes around, comes around." And soon enough you'll be found out.

10. Not Surrounding Themselves with Good People

Tom Osborne, the tremendously successful former head coach of Nebraska football, once said that his key to success was surrounding himself with good people and allowing them to do their job.

To me, as a leader, this is the most important point. You must have the confidence in the people around you to do their job right, let them do their job and in-turn praise them for a job well done.

It just makes sense!

Toshiba announces 1.8 inch hard drive with 100 GB capacity

Toshiba is all set to give the storage capacity of portable devices like MP3 players, PMP, Cell phones, etc a shot in the arm with its new MK1011GAH hard drive measures 1.8 inches but has a whopping storage capacity of 100 GB. It uses perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology and an improved error correction code for this. The hard drive has an areal density of 240.8 megabits per square millimeter (155.3 gigabits per square inch). The MK1011GAH has 2 platters and 4 heads, average seek time of 15 ms, data transfer speed of 100 MB/sec at 4200 RPM, and uses the ATA-7 (LIF connector) interface.

The hard drive measures 54 × 71 × 8 mm and weighs 59 grams. With mass production scheduled to start by January 2007 running low on disk space will be a thing of the past.

EveryDNS, OpenDNS Under Botnet DDoS Attack

EveryDNS, a company that offers free domain name management services, has been hit by a massive DDoS (distributed denial-of-service attack) that affected thousands of sites, including OpenDNS (a sibling startup that runs the PhishTank anti-phishing initiative).

The 400mbps botnet attack did not affect the core recursive DNS resolution service offered by OpenDNS but the company's home page and corporate blog were crippled for about 90 minutes on Dec. 1.

The attack appears to be targeting EveryDNS, a sibling business owned and operated by OpenDNS CEO David Ulevitch. OpenDNS uses services from EveryDNS.

At 10:00 a.m. EST on Dec. 2, EveryDNS said the sustained attack continues. "[It] is currently being mitigated and service is restored. All services are under close watch by a team of network administrators around the world," according to a note on the home page.

The attack started sometime Friday afternoon and, from all indications, was targeting Web sites that used the free DNS management services. "We were collateral damage," Ulevitch explained. "They were going after the DNS provider of these sites and we took the brunt of it."
